WELCOME!

KIA ORA E TE WHĀNAU,

Welcome to the 23/24 season for Wellington City Pirates Baseball!

For those who may not know me, my name is Joe McGarry and I am proud and honoured to take the helm of our Pirates Crew this year. I am looking forward to another awesome summer of baseball as our club continues creating opportunities for kids to have fun playing baseball with their friends.

OFF SEASON RECAP

This has been an exciting winter for our club as a core group of club athletes have trained through the off-season and earned national recognition. We have had three club members selected for Baseball NZ’s U15 25 person national squad and one club member selected to the U18 national development programme. Well done crew!

That excitement has grown as winter has turned into spring and pre-season training, and our Pirates have begun inviting their friends to join our Crew. Regionally, we have had a number of players join Wellington Baseball Association’s pitching and hitting clinics. More locally, we have had a blend of old and new athletes join our pre-season work at the Wests rugby club. Our players are growing from strength to strength as they laugh and have fun together. Many of these new friends have already registered for our Development and Travel Leagues. Keep it up!

All of this to say, our players, coaches, parents and supporters are absolutely ready to hit the ground running this spring, and the Wellington City Pirates are poised to be a very competitive club, marked by the laughter of friends playing a sport they love together.

PRE-SEASON PREPARATION

Looking forward, there have been some minor developments within Wellington Baseball this off-season, specifically with the addition of a new 14U grade. This year our club will be competing in the 14U and 16U grades, and we will also compete in a number of exciting regional and national baseball festivals. We’re also very excited to welcome Mak Fox, former pitcher for the Auckland Tuatara, to our coaching team. Mak will help develop our pitching and throwing programme and is a remarkable addition to our club’s coaching staff.

As I’ve mentioned above, we have opened registrations alongside our pre-season training. We’re grateful that many of our long-standing sponsors have pledged their support once again this year and we are working closely with the team at Wellington City Council to prepare our Diamonds for Term 4.

TIME TO SIGN-UP!

Right now, it’s time for your Pirate to sign-up and start their pre-season training.

The single best thing they can do is work on shoulder strength and get ready to throw. We’ve included links to some great YouTube tutorials below in case you can’t join us quite yet.

Have a safe holiday, and I’ll look forward to seeing you all around at The Pirates Lair next term!

Noho ora mai,

Joe
